The article discusses changes in the poetics of film diary and a general evolution of audio-visual documentary forms. The corpus of analysed material comprises an English television series entitled “The Return of the Dinosaurs. Wanderings of Nigel Marven”, which is representative of a nature film called “travelogue”.
The author analysed the ontological assumptions of the film, its structure, drama constructions, functions and genological localisation. The discussed series presents a text based onto- logically on computer simulations in which the simulated temporal and spatial environment is made plausible thanks to being subjected to the television ideology of “direct account” as well as various constructions that suggest reality. The analysed film exemplifies a postmodernist “vague genre” inscribed in the assumptions of transparency and performance aesthetics.
The author concludes that the series implements the television paradigm of consumer entertainment based on digit vision, intensified drama approximated to the feature cinema and evoking strong sensations in the recipient.
