dc.description.abstractThere is a manuscript in the Library of Hieronim Łopaciński in Lublin – biogram of the emigrant from Germany, residing in Lublin – Jan Karol Wilhelm Goetz (1813–1883) – compiled by his grandson Jan Riabinin (1878–1942). The main character of the biogram was member of the evangelical Church-Calvinist. He came in the forties of the 19th century to Polish Kingdom. He worked as a tutor in the Lublin region. In not so distant estate Eugenia Barroux (1817–1880), work emigrant – Catholic from France was a tutor. People of different religions got married. Their children had Polish national identity. At least one of them – Paulina (1854 –1921) was baptized according to Roman Catholic church tradition. In 1872 Paulina got married with Russian official from Lublin Sergiusz Riabinin (1839–1917). He was Orthodox. Due to the binding regulations Paulina Goetz changed her religion to Orthodox. Son of Riabinins – Jan has merits for the development of Polish historical studies and Polish scientific organization of the keeping of archives and Polish librarianship. He graduated from Russian gymnasium in Lublin where he was taught Latin and Greek by an excellent Polish scientist and bibliophile Hieronim Łopaciński (1860–1906). He graduated from history in Moscow. From 1904 to 1918 he was employed in the Main Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow. He returned to Poland with his family in 1921. In the years 1922–1938 he was working in the State Archive in Lublin. From 1922 he was a Polish citizen. As a historian of Lublin and researcher of archive sources of its history he continued the worked started by his teacher, and then adviser and confidant in scientific matters – Łopaciński. Furthermore, he worked on manuscripts and old prints after Łopaciński in the Library of his name. The present manuscript of Riabinin is a contribution to the studies on Polish educational system in Lublin and Lublin region and history of Lublin followers of evangelical Church.en_EN
