Lithography was a revolutionary invention. The complexity of processes and the simplicity
of phenomena, as well as multiformity and naturalness of lithography has fascinated many
artists. However, the specificity of lithography and the result of work’s dependency on experience
and the consciousness of technique determine that concentrating on this technique could not
be accidental or superficial. This is a demanding technique but one that offers unusual creative
experiences and effects.
The article is a short review of the stages of the technological activities appropriate to
a lithographical workshop and their connections with the creative process and the quality of
print. The author also elaborates on the relations between the degree of expertise in technology
and the ability to realise an artistic plan.
It highlights the inspiring elements of the techniques and different creative attitudes which
inspire the technologists. It is an attempt to describe the present state of lithopraphy and examine
possibilities for the future. It is a summary of the author’s own fascinations, experiences and
observations based on artistic and didactic work, on meetings with the artists, and on participation
in workshops and presentations. The description of the processes and phenomena concerns
working with the stone and does not include the related technologies connected with the use of
the other matrices.
