The author of the paper is particularly interested in an originally structural notion of
relevance involved in cognitive and pragmatic contexts of information processing and having
in its terminological structure a notion of pragmatic relevance.
Pragmatic relevance (pertinence, practical relevance, situational relevance) is a relation
appearing between a set of information looked up by a looking up informational system as
a result of using a looking up instruction and a user of information, especially his/her informational
need. The relation fixes the grade of usefulness of a technically and/or semantically
relevant piece of information because of a user’s interest.
Considered as the most important among factors creating behaviour of information
users are personal features of a user, social experience, requirements of the environment, roles
played in social groups, attitudes towards an object including the weight (‘importance’, ‘essentiality’,
‘meaning’) of fulfilling an informational need by a user, supposed consequences
of an action under the circumstances of incomplete information, etc.
