Epilepsy is a nervous system disorder, which is characterized by a complex and often quite
complicated etiology. The essence of the disorders is an incorrect bioelectric brain function,
which leads to the occurrence of epileptic seizures of different forms – large ones, called grand
mal, and small ones, petit mal. The vast majority of the society connects this disorder with
classical convulsive seizures, accompanied by lockjaw, unnaturally bent body, uncoordinated
movement, and increased muscle tension. The still low level of knowledge on this disease is
a reason why epilepsy is sometimes connected with the need of special education, cognitive
delay, and low IQ. These stereotypes influence greatly the perception of a diseased child as
worse and less able, also among its school peers. In reality, though, the key role of epilepsy
treatment is acceptance of the disease and fighting its after-effects. The quality of life of a child
influences greatly the development of its physical and intellectual functions, functioning in
the society, and fulfilling the social roles.
