The aim of this paper is to analyze the use of the Italian pluperfect (trapassato prossimo)
in the translation of the travel memoir Heban, written by the Polish author Ryszard
Kapuściński. The study focuses on certain specific textual and pragmatic elements of the
text, which may lead the translator to choose pluperfect as opposed to other tenses, such
as imperfetto, passato prossimo, passato remoto.
