Sándor Márai - antropolog, emigrant, humanista (rozważania o istocie pisarstwa Máraiego na przykładzie Dziennika)

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present Sándor Márai as an emigrant, a humanist, and - which frequently accompanies the latter - an anthropologist. These occupations are chiefly examined on the basis of his Diary, which he conscientiously wrote for half of his life, until his suicide in 1989. The author also provides a short biography of the writer, which he finds indispensable. Sándor Márai’s Diary is a diary of an intellectual, who includes in his memoirs his personal reflection on existence, the world, the past and present. It is a moral evaluation of the contemporary societies, a particular — but perhaps not individual? - anthropological vision. Márai (bom in 1900), already before the World War II known as a writer, publicist and translator, unfortunately seems slightly underestimated, or even forgotten, nowadays. After the war he shared the fate of many rebellious souls and since 1948 continuously lived abroad. This paper also examines the context of emigration. Márai, an anthropologist and a nomad, is strictly connected with his native language, the issue of which, though perhaps marginally, is included in the article.
