“Nasza Księgarnia” publishing house (a joint-stock company) of the Polish Public Schools
Teachers’ Association was founded in 1921. Its first location was Warsaw, 22 Widok st. It housed
the offices, store-houses and the bookshop. The immediate organizers and the company’s
founders were teachers, among others: Zygmunt Nowicki – the vice-chairman of the Directorial
Board, Karol Makuch – the general secretary of the Board, Stanisław Kruszewski – the chairman
of the Board of the Cooperative Society “Nasz Sklep”. A special role in the development
of publishing activity of “Nasza Księgarnia” was played by a long-time member of its Board
– Józef Włodarski.
In the interwar period “Nasza Księgarnia” published a total of 454 titles, of which some
were re-edited. A large group of talented writers for children and youth and illustrators cooperated
with the publisher.
„Nasza Księgarnia”, owing to its strict connections and cooperation with the largest national
teachers’ trade organization – the Polish Teachers’ Association – became one of the best
known publishing companies of the interwar period. Its activities were first of all aimed at satisfying
the needs of the Polish school, which was successfully realized due to vast knowledge
of the educational world.
