The divergence of the idea, the word, and its visual record results in an opportunity for extremely different approaches to the semantics of the word and to the iconic function of the written character within the realm of artistic endeavors. The first approach analyzed is directed toward the work of a conceptualist, who chose verbal semantics as the subject matter of his artistic undertaking. Next, the „concrete poem“ is considered, which, according to the determinants of its kind, depends on the synthesis of that which is visual and that which is verbal, whereas the afterimages of writings refer back to the sensory perceptions of interaction with writing, where the formal aspect of the letters is the artistic subject matter.
