The presented text is an introduction to research planned in a wider scope, the aim of which
will be an analysis of the old Polish achievements in the history of schools, and a reconstruction
of the actual knowledge of the society of that time, concerning the history of education.
The beginnings of the Polish educational-historical writings were connected with the Cracow
Academy, and mainly concerned its past and its contemporary situation. Since the end of the
16th century, when disagreements with the Jesuits grew stronger, the number of such works
increased rapidly. The history of other schools in Poland was poorly known, which also refers
to the Academy of Vilnius and the Academy of Zamość. Also the works concerning convent
schools and schools of other religious denominations were rather modest. In the written legacy
of the Old Polish period, there are no educational-historical works that would offer more
significant scientific value. These works were usually papers concerning the contemporary
problems of particular schools, printed documents and curricula. Several works of a wider
scope appeared first at the end of the 16th century, but it was the 17th century that was the
first period of scientific approach to the history of Polish schools.
