L'Image de l'Autre dans des romans et nouvelles coloniaux français choisis portant sur le Maghreb : (1895-1939)

Abstract

Celem pracy jest analiza obrazu "obcego" w wybranych francuskich powieściach i nowelach kolonialnych dotyczących Maghrebu na przełomie XIX i XX w. Zetknięcie się "kolonizatora" i "kolonizowanego" w tak specyficznym kontekście geograficznym i ideologicznym powoduje napięcie między "ja" a "inny", "tutaj" a "gdzie indziej". Praca ta pokazuje także jak literacki obraz "obcego" wypływa ze stereotypowego wyobrażenia o "innym", które często wynika z osobistych fobii i lęków. Rozdział I obejmuje krótki zarys historyczny francuskiej literatury egzotycznej i kolonialnej. Zasadnicza część pracy zawiera trójstopniową analizę obrazu "obcego" (1. warstwa leksykalna, 2. wymiar czasowo-przestrzenny, sposób funkcjonowania postaci, tekst jako dokument antropologiczny, 3. wpływ szeroko rozumianej Historii na literacki obraz "obcego"). Kim jest "inny" we francuskiej literaturze kolonialnej i jak jest w niej obecny? Praca ta jest próbą odpowiedzi na te pytania.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the construction of the image of the stranger in French colonial literature at the turn of the nineteenth century. The colonial context produces the tensions between colonists and local population arising from the conflicts of their civilization, religion and customs. Firstly, the thesis studies the space be tween the 'I' and the 'Other', between 'here' and 'there' as a reflection of mutual political, social and cultural influence. Secondly, it examines the power of stereotypes: the personal phobias and anxieties. Chapter One presents the short history of the exotic and colonial literature. Chapter Two presents the lexical analysis of the words used to describe the Other in the works of six French authors. Chapter Three investigates the characters, time and space in these texts. Chapter Four analyses how the image of the Other has been influenced by political ideas and collective imagination.
