The author of the article discusses the issue of illustrations in children books. She places
the problems connected with the topic in a wider historical and social context by taking the
relationship between the editorial solutions and the market demands, readership tastes as
well as the psychological, social and artistic contexts into consideration. She emphasizes the
issue of status, function and types of illustrations in books oriented at the reading experience
shared by children and adults. The author suggests to use a term “shared literature” to refer
to this type of writing as an analogous opposition to the notion of “individual literature”
introduced by Jerzy Cieślikowski. Due to the selection of this particular type of literature the
author discusses different variants of the artistic statement through illustration including
examples and artistic consequences of situations in which (1) the author is the writer and
illustrator of his own text (Maciej Wojtyszko), (2) the writer and the author work in a tandem
and inspire each other, (3) the illustrator is given a commission from a particular publishing
house. In the concluding part, the author underscores that harmony between a text and an
artistic vision is crucial both from the artistic and educational point of view.
