The article presents an educational reality diagnosis from the perspective of the shaping of
students’ national identity. The background for changes in the relationship between school
and youth outlined in the article includes the most important contemporary social processes,
such as globalization, European integration, postmodernism, technopol and consumerism,
which cause current identity crises. Despite using the term national identity, since it is
established in literature, the author shares the culturalist perspective and believes that we
should rather speak of a single, undivided personal identity and numerous identifications
with various groups, in this particular case the national identification. In order to have a real
relationship with students, school must realize that it does not have monopoly on civic
education any more and it has to recognize this change in its programs. Although its role
is fundamental, it is not final. Therefore it is important to acknowledge the significance of
lifelong and parallel out-of-school education in the whole process of shaping the individual.
