The article describes amusing characterization of professors and teachers as the heroes of old jokes, published in 14 humoristic and satirical magazines on
the turn of the 19th century and in interwar period of twenty years.
The characterization of professors and school-teachers results most often from their statements, rarely it is contained in opinions of story-teller or interlocutors.
Often in jokes professors as characters are thoughtful and absent-minded persons. They react strangely and answer surprisingly for interlocutors. Another attributes of professors derided in jokes are forgetfulness and illogical
statements. Some habits of scholars are also amusing. Only in few jokes professors are seen as discerning persons, who react with retort.
Contained in jokes opinions of another persons (in particular Cracow’s townspeople) about professors’ behavior, standard of erudition and cock-sureness
are exaggeratedly critical and often groundless.
Only in some jokes attention of their anonymous authors converges on tutors and governess’.
