The basis of the article material located in the pragmalinguistic research centre constitutes, not widely known by
a recipient, the letters of the 19th-century representatives of aristocracy—Helena and Mieczysław Pawlikowski. The
author of the study focuses on one aspect of the linguistic etiquettes—on ways and means to compliment the
recipient or to express disapproval for his or her behaviour. Both phrases appear in addressing forms of the
initial parts of tested letters, as well as the terms, often metaphoric, scattered around the body of the analyzed
texts indicate a significant attribution of family emotional interactions. The overviewed material allows to
reconstruct the linguistic image of each spouse, and gives an idea of an emotional bond connecting them. It is also
possible to realize that numerous acts of behaviour of the sphere of direct contacts have been faithfully
transferred into the private correspondence.
