Abstract

The materiał for linguistic analysis conducted in the paper consists of words or word connections originating from Polish literaturę about Tatra Mountains, which presents the problem of faith of Podhales people in existence of cutthroat treasures. Brigandage on Podhale in XVII and XVIII century was extremely escalated, and that is why this subject was often taken up in Podhale’s folklore and then in the belles-letters. An aim of the analysis was the recreation of linguistic picture of this part of highlanders reality, which consists of: faith in cutthroat treasures, places where they were hidden, ways of marking of these places, defining ąuantity and kinds of these treasures and finally the magie connected to them. The reconstruction of this reality allows to think that this particular escalation of beliefs connected with cutthroat treasures in Carpathian Mountains has its cause in deep poverty of Podhale s people being the conseąuence of many external factors.
