The term of ‘literary translation’ appears in many cases as ambiguous and difficult to define.
Crossing different testimonies of French and Polish writers, such as Jean-René Ladmiral,
Jean-Yves Masson, Philippe Jaccottet, Stanislaw Barańczak or Magdalena Nowotna, we want
to consider the existing analogies and dependences between the process of translation
and literary creation. The desire of the author is to present the experience of translation as
a meeting with the strange and the uncommon, an invitation to consider the resistance of
a literary work and a research for what made the specificity of the text. The responsibility of
the translator will be evocated through the presentation of the various risks they have to take
and the necessity of choosing, making an individual project. One of the central questions will
be loyalty to the original, which can be perceived as attachment to the semanticism, or as an
effort to unveil the main ideas of the work. The contradictory nature of the position of the
translator, self-effacing and presenting at the same time through subjective adaptation of the
text will also be analized. It will be an opportunity to think about the possibility of enrichment
of the target language, by the awakening of new linguistic solutions, and to see translation as
a testimony of the constant dynamism of literature works.
