The article presents the reasons and method of changing the personal help for communication of a mute boy, Mateusz,
and what were the results of these changes. Mateusz perfectly understands speech, has a broad knowledge of passive
vocabulary and a huge need to communicate. However, due to an insufficient control of his speech organs, the only
way of communication available for him is augmentative and alternative communication.
The first part of the article contains a description of a previous communication book and an explanation why it
ceased to be functional for the boy. The second part characterizes modifications that his personal communication
aid underwent and the reasons behind the changes. Both the first and second part presents examples of particular
pages from personal dictionaries which facilitates the comparison of the books and illustrates the transformation
of the first one. The final part of the article describes the results that the change of personal dictionary
brought into the boy’s communication.
