In the 19th century, it was common for women to keep diaries. The diarists of these
times were Henrieta Błędowska, Anna Potocka and Maria Kietlińska. There diaries
often have an intimate nature, with much of the content devoted to memories of
childhood and early youth. There are three distinct depictions of childhood: happy,
calm and sad. The women’s lifestyles were shaped by political and social factors as
well as changes related to family life. The diaries clearly show the declining popularity
of large, open family homes due to increasing privacy of family life.
