The article presents a critical analysis of the achievements of The Commission of
National Education, in the context of the ideals and values of the Enlightenment, such
as rationalism, utilitarianism, or the cult of knowledge. The author’s considerations relate
to patriotic and civic education, which were especially accented by the Commission, as
well as teacher training concept and vision of their social mission. In conclusion, the
author recommends caution in attempting uncritical transfer of historical solutions to the
present. As the main message of the eighteenth-century achievements of the Commission,
however, one should consider deep hope for a better future in education, which is of crucial
importance, both from the point of view of the individual and of the society as a whole.
