The Commission of National Education, over almost 21 years of its activity, evolved as
an institution. The concept of reform and its implementation were perfected over the
years. This reflected in the laws and regulations published by the Commission. Tracking
these changes, in the spheres of both theory and practice, reveals the originality and
the development of Polish educational thought, as well as the educational reality in late
decades of the 18th century. The transformation of the Commission as an institution had
an impact on the formation and improvement of the school code of law consisting of the
Laws established by The Commission of National Education.
Until 1793, there were three successive versions of the Ustawy Komisji Edukacji
Narodowej [The Laws of The Commission of National Education] that were in force in
the schools of the Republic of Poland of the time.
The first one was a trial version entitled Project. Ustawy Komisji Edukacji Narodowej
dla stanu akademickiego i na szkoły w krajach Rzeczypospolitej przepisane [Prescribed Laws
of The Commission of National Education for the academic profession and schools in
the Republic of Poland] (1781–1783), then the text published in 1783 (1783–1790) and
finally the version whose legislation was passed to schools in 1790 (with several-month
break in the summer of 1793 forced by Targowica) (1790–1794).
