In the time of the reform implemented by Hugo Kołłątaj in Cracow Academy, professors of
that university were obligated to popularize knowledge. From 1782, there were organized
public sessions, during which professors of the University disseminated the information
about their achievements in meetings with inhabitants of Cracow. From 1780 popular
lectures on mechanics organized by Physics College, which were designed for craftsmen,
proved an interesting form of cooperation with the community of Cracow. In 1780, the
Medical Department, in order to provide a better professional preparation of midwives
and barber surgeons, ran training courses designed for the two vocational groups on
a systematic basis. However, those initiatives met with a very poor response from the
local community. It was not until the 1820s that craftsmen themselves initiated launching
training courses. They were the first attempts at developing an organized educational
activity in the lands of Poland. That activity of the extra muros university character was
addressed to adults.
