A myth is one of the central concepts of modern cultural theory. The term is no longer
used in its original meaning of a fantasy story. Rather, myth is understood as telling of
the values that are key to a given culture. Hence, The Commission of National Education
myth talks about those of the Commission’s achievements that had a universal nature,
such as the ability to instill in the society a belief in: the necessity of a public and national
school; the educational work as a patriotic and civic activity; the human worth as dependent
on his or her education and quality of work; and the strong link between the prosperity
of a nation and its educational level. All these beliefs are still valid and important. Yet, the
knowledge about the Commission among the Polish society is small, and the myth of the
Commission remains underappreciated.
