The article presents the ways of understanding films, typical of secondary-school youth. The
pattern of youth’s interpretation of films is called “anthropological interpretation of films”.
It combines the postulates of cognitive psychology, cognitive film theory and the philosophy
of neopragmatism. The receptive attitude of the youth is called “active pragmatism”, which
involves the negotiative character of assigning meanings, and being open to new senses,
which are simultaneously, in the act of reception, joined with the fixed experience, possessed
knowledge, and “utilization” of the film being watched (placing it in the context of one’s own
life). Young people interpret films by placing the received data in individual epistemological
contexts: existential, social, cultural, and ideological ones.
The anthropological model of film interpretation offers explicit conclusions for the teaching
of Polish in schools. It should accentuate the active, individualized and contextualized method
of reading all texts of culture; it should recall the concept of “subjective aesthetics”, and foster
authentic dialogue in the class, in which not only the presented interpretations are discussed,
but also the cultural contexts and individual experience underlying the text comprehension.
