The article presents the methodology of working on a literary text in the higher-secondary school. By making his starting point reading of a fragment of a well-known novel, The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, the author attempts to mark a wide horizon for his reflection, which seems important from the perspective of various fields of the humanities, and which, hopefully, may appear attractive to the pupil. Interpretation of the said text, immersed in rich contextual network, turns into metareflection, including the mechanisms of creation and impact of a certain kind of literary texts (genology and reception of a detective story), and the difficulties in setting the limits between popular and high culture, especially within the postmodern paradigm. An important element is also the philosophical inquiry – inspired by the realized project – which concerns the nature, possibilities and limitations of human cognition.en_EN
