The problem of stress affects eveiyone; it is an inevitable element of human life. Among those who seem to be
particularly exposed to a strong influence of stressors are young pcople who find themselves on the developmental
path between childhood and adulthood, a transition which reąuires taking on new social and life positions.
Adolescents frequently feel helpless facing the problems of the world in which they live, the result of the
increasing time and civilisation pressures. The period of attaining psychological maturity is the time in life
asso- ciated with a special need for attention, help and useful tips on how to live and successfully handle
problems. Young people often face a lack of adequate coping strategies. In order to handle stress better, there is
a need for the knowledge of practical approaches and the ability to use skills appropriate to a given situation.
Developing coping skills in early childhood seems to be a most favourabIe approach. Three kinds of techniques -
physical, psychological and pedagogical - serve a useful purpose. The problem of stress and its somatic and
psychological consequences have become an impulse for developing institutional forms of support, and also for
creating stress management education programmes. These techniques, thanks to their effectiveness and the
feasibility of implementation, should become regular elements of educational programmes.
