The phenomenon of joined attention, i.e. the ability to coordinate attention between the
objects of joined attention and another person, is important for the social, cognitive, and
emotional development of a deaf and hearing child. A deaf child enters episodes of joined
attention differently than a hearing child: a deaf child cannot simultaneously receive language
communicates and direct the sight towards the object of joined attention. Deaf mothers adapt
to the specific needs of deaf children during the episodes of joined attention by using the
sequential schema of dividing attention as well as various strategies of proper division of
attention. However, hearing mothers encounter problems during early interactions with deaf
children. It is recommended that hearing parents emulate natural behaviours of deaf mothers
during the episodes of joined attention with deaf children.
