Abstract

The present article concerns Jacek Dukaj’s excellent novel The Crow. In 2009, this contem-porary writer published the book which aroused interest with its themes, selection of lexical stylistic means and a perspective of a rich repertoire of diverse literary references. The author of the article inspects not only the subject matter of the book but also its organization of linguistic material. The artistic style of Dukaj’s literary work was influenced by puns and linguistic humour, among others, whereas delimitation and the graphic design emphasized the meaning of the narrator’s statements, quite often obscured. “Deciphering” thereof, in turn, helped the author of the article find the hidden depths of the novel, as well as ask about the age of The Crow’s reader and the legitimacy of incorporating the novel into compulsory reading curriculum.
