Social challenges from 21st century require a major change in people’s consciousness, thinking and acting. Because
social changes take place thanks to education and through education, it is necessary to pay attention just on
education as a way to change people’s consciousness, thinking and acting. This can be accomplished through the
acquisition and development – in the course of formal, informal and non-formal – key competencies for sustainable
development. Education for sustainable development is a model which is still developing, evolving, but it is a way
of achieving such social, environmental and economic changes, that will make the world a more just, more friendly
place to live for people today and generations to come.
