Reproduction (1970) by P. Bourdieu and J.C. Passeron is a well-known study of the
transmission of legitimate culture within the educational system. The process is dominated
by the linguistic criterion – “linguistic capital” – as a tool of symbolic violence related to
social processes. Unanswered remains the question of the process quality at the present time
when the linguistic criterion is also related to iconic messages, including media messages.
The article is a reflection on the contemporary version of symbolic violence which influences
the identity of a student entangled in the process. The work is supported by experiments of
contemporary French didactics.
