Special Education School Complex No. 13 for Children and Adolescents with Autism in Krakow has been realizing an
innovative programme created by Magdalena Sabik which uses elements of dance and theatre therapy for several years.
The programme assumes structuring school artistic and spectacle activity through the creation of a theatre group.
The group, known as the Actor’s Club, consists of students chosen from different classes as well as therapists and
volunteers.
The main assumption of the work in the Actor’s Club is creation of a space for the development of one’s own
positive image through the opportunity of appearing in a group and through activity that comes from the student’s
own will rather than as an answer to the teacher’s instruction. Regular, weekly meetings are a chance to develop
the skill of spending spare time in a constructive and pleasant way. Difficulties in abstract thinking and using
imagination are particularly visible in the functioning of people with autism. Therapeutic actions conducted in the
Actor’s Club are directed to the development of these competencies and to the development of social contacts,
spontaneity and inculcation to taking up artistic activity.
The effect of the work of the Actor’s Club are theatrical as well as vocal and dancing performances presented
during school celebrations, festivals and competitions for children and adolescents.
