The article presents the results of the research on the presence of Norwid’s works in school
textbooks, especially those used in the lower-secondary school. It also presents the methods
of didactic elaboration of Norwid’s works in selected textbooks. On this background, the
author reflects on the possibilities of confronting pupils with Norwid’s difficult poems, and
suggests a reading of his works set in the existential context, which simultaneously actualizes
pupils’ personal experience. Further, the author presents a course of didactic activities in
reading the poetic parable “Sphinx” [II], which is a practically verified example of valuable
reading of Norwid’s poetry in the lower-secondary school.
In the conclusion of the article, the author presents the limitations that result from reading
Norwid in the historical-literary context. An alternative solution, suggested in the article, is
reading selected poems in the axiological context, indicating the richness of cultural references
and drawing pupils’ attention to the issues connected with human existence in the modern
world.
The text of the article is supplemented with an Appendix, which presents the frequency
of texts occurring in the textbooks that form the bases for the methodological reflection
presented in the article.
