The article is a presentation of the work with students during the monographic lecture “Ideologicalartistic
pursuits of the Polish Romanticists”. The centre of the artistic space of Pan Tadeusz is the
idealized image of the homeland, Lithuania, characterized by multilayer semantics. In the class,
we analyse Pan Tadeusz from the perspective of tale-telling, an important factor in the creation
of the presented world, which “in an amazingly faithful way preserves the unbounded love for the
homeland detail and everyday life of the inhabitants of the Nowogródek region” (Bachórz). For
the very form of expression can most vividly reveal even sociological truths, the basics of thinking
and the norms governing the society. The tale-telling character of the poem is connected with
the central position of the noble family village in the presented world; it is the “Polish Pompeii”,
situated near “the main road from Grodno to Smolensk and called Soplicowo” (Witkowska).
A noble family village is regarded by the author as the sanctuary of Polishness. After the fall of the
uprising, here, as if in the roots, tradition found refuge in the hearts of the simple folk. “From this
tradition must emerge both the independence of the country and the future form of its government”.
In the observation of the text, students pay special attention to the themes, types of conflict, the
system of characters, and collective scenes, and analyse the narrator’s concepts. Students work with
the text, using the method of documentary analysis. The insightful reading of the text, its formal
analysis, and the observation of its artistic features provides the students with a method of reaching
the meanings, develops their orientation in the processes of text creation and text reception, and
acquaints them with the phenomena of literary development, changes of literary form and of means
of expression.
