The rapid development of civilization has led a crisis of the society, nation and individuals.
The greatest challenge for education is to teach the Polish youth how to deal with the tasks
of the present times. The Commission of National Education (KEN) is not only a symbol of
the greatest traditions but also a model to follow. What is more, it shows the trend of the
Polish education. From the point of view of the society and an individual, patriotic and civil
upbringing is regaining importance. It allows for building a modern country, enables young
Poles to open themselves to Europe without losing their national identity, allows for engaging
into building a civic society. Goals of the humanistic education that are currently realized
expose the assumptions of the anthropocentric-cultural movement. They also include civic
education referring to universal values such as: truth, right and beauty, human life, forming
a sense of dignity and responsibility. The development of the awareness of self-esteem and
sociability show the significance of social community. It is crucial for the social and national
development to broaden conscious patriotism, democracy, and respect for the Polish cultural
heritage and simultaneously be welcoming to the cultures of Europe and the world. Education
which is close to the rules and conceptions of humanism is as important as the utilitarian
conception which is directed towards gaining technical or vocational abilities.
