The division of human life into the learning period and the professional activity period
becomes nowadays more and more irrelevant. This is connected with constantly changing
character of a human work and with the fact that nobody can be sure if the professional
qualifications they have acquired during their learning period will be sufficient. The labor
market and the technologies undergo changes, therefore it is crucial to learn continuously.
The teachers did not pass over for the changes because throughout the last few years they
have been concerned by the system of professional promotion, from a trainee teacher to
a certified one. Getting promoted is a visible proof of a teacher’s professional development.
Therefore two questions need to be answered: does a teacher still develop after becoming
a certified teacher? Were the teacher encouraged in any way to develop when there was
no system of professional promotion?
The essential issue is to define the nature of professional development, especially of
the professional personality. Professional development is a process when one’s professional
interests and abilities are developed. Only the teacher who is active intellectually and
socially has a chance to adjust themselves to the constantly changing reality and to prepare
the students to act the same. The factor which shapes teacher’s essential competences is
a lifelong education.
