The article presents the most important conclusions from the survey conducted by the author
in 2005, on 600 lower secondary school (gimnazjum) pupils in the Lublin voivodship. The
aim of the research was to diagnose youth’s attitude towards poetry and to evaluate Polish
lessons devoted to poetry. The article also presents the main assumptions of the author’s
independent project concerning text-based tasks, expressed in the form of postulates, created
on the basis of pupils’ suggestions, e.g. the need to include modern literary texts in the Polishcourse
curriculum for gimnazjum, also texts by young poets, representing cultural spheres of
youth (hip-hop); emphasizing the cultural-tutorial character of the native language lessons;
new opportunities for the Polish teacher functioning as a guide, facilitator and observer,
who directs pupils towards the right reading and understanding of texts, and at the same
time respects their right of particularization, and who selects the reading materials and the
perspective of their understanding, and uses a wide range of modern methods of analysis and
interpretation of a poetic text).
