Text production skills, that is the ability to produce a coherent, complete text on a given subject,
is an important item in the core curriculum and school curricula; reception and production of
a text is crucial skills in the modern concept of language training in contemporary schools.
A detailed analysis of Matura (school-leaving) examination papers (the mock-exam in 2006)
shows that frequently a text gives students an opportunity to produce a “free” piece of writing,
a collection of loosely related reflections, and personal opinions, which are irrelevant to the
content of the text and do not result from a careful analysis of the provided excerpt. Students’
papers often contain a summary of the text instead of its analysis and interpretation.
In such a situation, the main task of a Polish teacher is training the pupils in the writing skills,
in logical, analytical, and coherent writing. Must the times be forgotten, then, when Polish
lessons allowed the pupils to “free their imagination” and appreciate all creative activities?
