The subject of consideration in this article is the presence of the motive of dance in different
texts of culture. The author observes that dance is a frequent literary and visual motive.
As the school interpretation of texts is placed in the wide cultural perspective, the author
provides information on the history of dance, its position in the semiotic theory of culture,
its functions and types, and pays special attention to the ritual character of dancing, which is
also inscribed in the problem of regional education. Lastly, selected Polish textbooks for the
lower and upper secondary school are analysed with respect to the presence of references to
the art of dance.
