The authors show a fragment of broader research on the state of linguistic knowledge in students and its translation to skills.
The main goal of the presented part of the research is defining the level of text creation competence in Primary School students
(3rd and 6th grade) and Lower Secondary School students (3rd grage), whereas the object of the research are texts written by
the children (letters and compositions). In order to define text creation skill on different levels of education in measurable values
and to illustrate it, point value is assumed for each component of the competence (text structure, pragmatic background,
cognitive aspect and chosen linguistic and stylistic features).
Comparing the level of skills in terms of command of language while creating longer text yields unexpected results: initially the
level of text creation competence rises with age and school education – it reaches higher in 6th grade students in comparison
with the abilities of younger students. In Lower Secondary School students, however, the level of the skill decreases dramatically.
Also, the research shows that all students achieve the lowest results in terms of linguistic and stylistic correctness.
