“Nowy Dziennik” - a Zionist daily magazine, issued in the interwar period
in Cracow, earned its place among the legendary titles of Polish and Jewish
magazine history. Jewish press issued between 1918-1939 is a valuable piece
of evidence today, documenting the presence of Jewish people on the Polish
ground. It presents the development of the political, cultural, literary and most
of all, social life. In the history of Polish Zionist press, it left a m ark of a characteristic
climate of the age and the way of life of Jews in Poland. The main goal
of the authors was to present the place of the librarian, publishing and press
problems on the pages of “Nowy Dziennik”. The work includes an analysis of the
paper’s contents. On the basis of the conducted studies, it has been proven that
the cultural theme, narrowed down to the thematic problems, has been a constant
point of interest, though its intensity was dependent on various factors.
The use of the study material was dictated by the repeatability of the issues
or their unique importance. It was impossible, to discuss all the collected data.
Although “Nowy Dziennik” undoubtedly deserves a full monograph, the authors
limited themselves to the selected aspects, which surely do not tell much about
the general character of the magazine. Because of that, the image of the daily
magazine from Cracow is fragmentary.
The work is divided into parts devoted to: “Nowy Dziennik” in general,
the issue of libraries on its pages, and further on the publishing houses and
bookstores, which he described. Another part comprises the issues of the press
registered and described by the publicists of “Nowy Dziennik”, and the last one
presents information on the promotion of the books present in the paper. The
work starts with an introduction, which includes information on the Jewish
people in Cracow between 1918-1939, and ends with research conclusions.
The bulk of the work comprises chapters on the issues of libraries and press in
“Nowy Dziennik”.
All of the analyzed issues indicate th a t the material published in “Nowy
Dziennik” was targeted at educated readers with vast interests, mostly men,
but with time there were more and more content directed at women. When
in 1928 Paulina Appenszlakowa started editing the women magazine, “Ewa”,
“Nowy Dziennik” started issuing a women-directed supplement, “Glos Kobiety”.
